BEE certificates play an even bigger and more important role than it did in the past.
Supplier and enterprise development is now also a priority element which the South African government is using to persuade more companies to become BEE compliant. Their objective is to have more companies actively involved in the BEE process to accelerate economic growth. Hence more emphasis is being placed on companies who are BEE compliant and more so those who are black owned.
Companies are also expected to encourage their suppliers to become BEE compliant in order to stay in the running for government contracts.
It is not always easy to find a black-owned supplier who can deliver the volumes of stock or goods that the company requires. However, the BEE scorecard has now given the option to companies to score BEE points by helping those small black-owned companies with monetary or non-monetary assistance to help them increase their capacity to deliver bigger quantities. At the same time, this boosts healthy competition and leads to reduced prices.
The following opportunities exist to increase your BEE score:
- Preferential procurement. BEE points are awarded when purchases are made from suppliers who are BEE compliant. The better the BEE level of the supplier, the more points are scored from purchases with that supplier.
- Enterprise development: BEE points are awarded when the company makes donations (monetary or non-monetary) to black-owned businesses who are not suppliers to the company.
- Supplier development: BEE points are awarded when the company makes donations (monetary or non-monetary) to black-owned businesses who are suppliers to the company.
